P4: Social Media Pages

Social Media

This is a social media page for the advertisement campaign for my BBC Three television series 'Pigeon Hunt'. The purpose for the social media page was to reach out to a larger demographic of audience without using much of the overall budget. Using social media I am able to promote photo's, videos, dates and content for free which will reach out to many people which they will be able to share with friends and spread the name of 'Pigeon Hunt'. Having a specific page where viewers can visit numerous times will give them a sense of series, a vibe that offers the themes and content that the series will contain.

Here I posted on the page as a reminder for the release date to the audience to make sure they don't lose interest in the series or forget about its release. Giving the audience constant reminders will build up hype for the series, preparing them for its official release date which they will know about.

A key part of drawing in the audience and giving them a pre sense of the series was choosing the right backgrounds for the page. Here I used the same title which will be used continuously throughout advertisement as a brand label. But as well I used a larger scale image for my background which is the same of that in my posters. The bleak image will give the audience a sense for the series' themes, but also introduce the world that 'Pigeon Hunt' revolves from, engaging them to the story and context for the series.

It was key to make sure all details in the blog were relevant yet didn't give too much away. I used a brief description to add to the mystery of the story and characters which mirrors what 'Pigeon Hunt' is all about. Uncertainty in a world, and mystery leading into fear.

I also created some posts as the characters which would give the audience a larger insight to the world of the series and get to know the characters more. It also offers alternate ideas perhaps not included within the series itself such as here, character motives and inner thought tracks. The Facebook page is another platform the audience can potentially learn more about characters and become more attached to them becoming very engaged with the series as a whole.

P4: Posters

Posters

The use of poster for the advertisement campaign was very useful as promotion as they gave a real sense to the audience the themes, vibe and style that 'Pigeon Hunt' tries to portray. The title used in all forms of advertisement gives the series its brand and label which audiences will recognise and remember. As well the background image gives the audience an insight into the world that 'Pigeon Hunt' works in, making the images seem far more real and connecting the audience more to what the series offers. With this, the posters are a constant reminder that this is a BBC Three drama and is only available on BBC Three. And the release date is always in full view for the audience which will constantly remind them and not allow them to forget.

In terms of creating the posters I used a screen shot of my main character 'Matthew' from the trailer and using photoshop, cut out his figure to use as the mysterious figure in the poster. From here I brought the cut out figure into Illustrator and using the editing software created him to be a shadowy figure and placed him into the scene.

For my background image all the photography from the film shoot was too bright and blurry and did not portray the gloomy feel I wanted. As well, my series is set in the Highland's of Scotland so Yorkshire Moor's would not have delivered the desired look. Instead I used Pixabay where you can download copyright free images. I used this image of Glencoe as it perfectly fitted the look and aesthetic I wanted to portray.

Then using illustrator I added in my logo title which I created previously on Illustrator for the proposal. I added text to write out the release dates as well as including the BBC Three logo to show it is a BBC Three production. I took the image from Wikipedia as it is very high quality and formats as a vector, so using it in Illustrator I was able to edit it further and utilise it to how I wanted it to look.

P4: Radio Broadcast

Radio Advert

For the radio advert, my product will be able to reach out to an audience when they commute, sit down etc, i.e. whenever they listen to radio. In my advert I have dialogue spoken by characters in the series in a montage of audio clips. I have my protagonist Matthew who introduces himself and gives a brief over view of the setting and the pivotal moment within the plot. I recorded other characters such as James, a reporter and a police man. This will give the audience a real sense of the true setting and the characters within the world.

I used a voice recorder to record each sound effect and actor and transferred all the audio into Final Cut Pro. I then ordered the audio chronologically and added in sound effects and voice effects to enhance the recording. Over the top of the actors voices I used the song 'The Last Hangman' written by Hotel Lux, who's song is a trademark of the series used within the trailer as well. I downloaded from YouTube into an MP3 converter which allowed me to add the song to the audio which I. I lowered the volume of the song on speaking moment in order for actors to be heard.

I as well used again my title logo on the top of the audio so when uploaded to YouTube, the audience wouldn't be looking at a blank screen. This also allowed my to further promote my series logo for audiences to remember.

P4: Trailer

Trailer

For the advertisement campaign, the trailer was the key element of advertisement that would promote and gain audience interest in the series. The trailer is capable to present the characters moving and talking, as well as show the landscape and world of the series. I can also show dates of release as well as the title logo as the trademark icon for the television series. As an element of advertisement, the trailer is capable of reaching out to a lot of viewers.  It can be viewed on YouTube, the BBC Three website, the Facebook page, as well as being shared by audiences to their friends and so on.
checking footage

For the trailer I filmed everything in one shoot day in order to save more time editing etc. I filmed the footage using a Sony DSLR. I transferred all the footage from the SD card onto the Mac, going through what footage was clear and sharp and what was blurry and unsuitable for usage.

Once I did that I organised all of my good footage onto a file and transferred it all onto Final Cut Pro

Here I cut down each piece of footage using only what I wanted and to make sure I got the best overall trailer. With most trailers, clips of the footage is very snappy built up of numerous shots. The intension with my trailer was to show a slow progression of the character and setting. I didn't want to move through clips in sick succession as I wanted to offer the audience a detailed and not brief view of the setting and atmosphere.

I edited all the footage so it lined up well and audio matched moments of tension within the footage which would give more impact.

For my music I used Hotel Lux's 'The Last Hangman' as the audio in the trailer as it gave the right vibe and atmosphere for what I wanted to show. I copied the link from YouTube into an MP3 converter which changed the file into one I could use on Final Cut Pro. After all the footage worked and lined up, I uploaded it all to YouTube for viewers to watch and share.

D2: Demonstrate how the technical and aesthetic properties of the media components meet the client brief

Client Brief -

Your TV drama series has been green lit by BBC Three and they have asked you to produce an advertising campaign for it.
The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness of the series and attract viewers when it is broadcast. You must identify and justify the series’ target audience.
Your campaign must have a strong message, include cross media advertising and there must be no copyright or ethical issues that could undermine BBC Three.

Advertising Campaign

The advertisement products I have created for my series 'Pigeon Hunt' range over cross media platforms such as a Trailer, uploaded to YouTube, a Radio Broadcast, Visual Posters with images and release dates and a social media page with information on the series and contact details of the production company.

The advertisement elements will certainly raise awareness of the series as they address a glimpse of what the series is like such as characters, setting and situation. I have also included production company (BBC Three) and release dates for the series (1st December).

There is a strong message with the series showing an empathetic view of teenagers and their life struggles. The message of the series is to 'watch your back', and the suspicion people have of each other.

There are certain no ethical issues within my advertisement elements as i have offered a fair and moral representation of all characters and the situation of the series. In terms of having a murderer I have made sure no content is too graphic or offensive to viewers. In terms of copyright I have used music from an up and coming band

Trailer

Technical -
My trailers video resolution (1920x1080)
File Format (.mov)
I compressed the video to make it smaller and able to export onto YouTube as well as on my Blog

Aesthetic -

For my video trailer I did not completely meet the requirements of producing a BBC Three Drama. This was due to my (£0) budget limiting me to resources, crew and equipment such as cameras, editing software's and lighting. The overall quality of my video was not as high quality as BBC would prefer. The lighting in my video is also quite dark and dim due to the lighting conditions on location. This meant I wasn't able to clearly check footage on shoot day to make sure lighting worked well. Despite correcting white balance and IPSO the quality did not come out as hoped. In terms of my sound there was a fair bit of wind in the audio as I didn't have a mic due to budget and resource restrictions. Thankfully none of my clips contained dialogue, but clips that I recorded including sound from the location also had a lot of wind and blowing which made the audio crackle and interrupted flow.

Elements in my video that I felt achieved client brief as well as BBC Three standards was the overall tone and content of the video, complying to a drama. With the dim lighting the camera picked up and the bleak, grey setting on location with the weather, my trailer looked very sinister and serious, complying to a serious drama with the horror aspects I wanted to include. I believe the trailer offered a strong message to viewers and audience allowing them to understand this is a drama series with horror elements. I felt my use of shots were varied and offered a well shot trailer with different angles and level such as medium shot, long shot, low angle and extreme close up. The varied angles made the video more engaging as I offered the audience numerous angles to get a better experience of the setting. I also used cross media as my trailer was uploaded to YouTube for viewers to watch as well as on my Facebook page where they can share content.

Ethics/ Copyright (ASA) -

All clips shot were copyright free, original content produced by myself such as images, audio and video. In my trailer as well as my Radio Broadcast, I used the song 'The Last Hangman' by an up and coming band Hotel Lux. I found their Instagram page and direct messaged them asking to rights to use their song -

In terms of ethical issues, I made sure I complied to the rules written out by the ASA. The themes I portrayed such as death with the bloody knife I made sure I did not cause any offence or have too graphic images to distress certain audience demographics as my advertisement will be open to the public via social media and posters.

Social Media Page

Technical - My products followed the Facebook guidelines. Videos were (1920x1080/ 1080x1080). Images are (72 dpi)

Aesthetic -

In terms of my aesthetics on my social media page I followed the Facebook guidelines for videos and images. I used my poster backdrop for my background photo and my title logo for my profile picture. The page also includes information about the series including a descriptions and release dates. I have included my trailer as well as counting down release date posts and also character thought tracks of characters. This meets BBC Three standards as the audience will be able to share these posts as well as liking commenting and watching on demand getting any information they require.

The aspects of my social media page that may not meet client requirements and BBC Three standards is the amount of content my page offers. I have limited posts including a release date, trailer and a character thought track. I could have also uploaded posters and the radio broadcast to offer more information and content to audiences. If on a larger budget and had more time I also could have done interviews with cast members and Q and A's as well as possible live streams so audiences could properly connect with the show and actors.

Ethics/ Copyright (ASA) -

I have made sure that all my content is non offensive to audiences as well as representing characters and themes fairly so viewers won't be offended. Complying to the ASA I have made sure that any audiences to decide to follow the page or like, comment and share that their details and privacy is protected and nothing within our page will exploit or expose their privacy.

Radio Broadcast

Technical - My radio advert is a (AIFF) with (92 KB's) as well as compressing it reducing loud sounds and increasing volume of quiet sounds.

Aesthetic -

The aesthetic properties of my radio advertisement don't completely meet the requirements of the client as well as the BBC standards. This is due to the lack of resources and lower quality equipment I had available to use. The limited resources and the lack of quality meant the sound and audio will suffer and not be completely clear and sharp. If I had the capability of recording in a recording studio the content would be sharper as well as having complete silence in the background as I was only able to record in an empty room yet small sounds such as ac and distant sound could have affected my audio

The positive elements within my radio broadcast was that the audio despite being low quality, was clear and distinctive to the characters speaking. The overall audio flowed well from the editing and the piece as a whole was clear. I compressed the audio so that loud sounds were quietened and quiet sounds were increased in volume which made the overall audio very clear as all the audio was equal. throughout. I also clearly featured a character profile of Matthew who also introduced and described the series as a whole. I also included a release date at the end to remind the audience the exact date of release.

Ethics/ Copyright (ASA)

I made sure that all content I used and recorded was copyright free and originally made by myself. I made sure that characters I represented were not offensive or portrayed negative stereotypes of the character.  I also followed the ASA requirements that states advertisement can't be too loud in order to prevent possible accidents on the road while driving.

Poster

Techical - My print resolution is (300 ppi) and the posters themselves were (150 ppi) as my poster is viewed from further away so viewers will see it clearly.

Aesthetic -

In terms of my poster I did not fully comply to the requirements of the BBC or the client. The backdrop of my poster was not original content made by myself as the images and shots I took on location were not high quality enough to use in printing. This is why I used non copyright images on the website 'Pixabay' which enabled me to use an image of a Scottish landscape in very high quality. I also do not completely portray clearly what my series is about as in one of my posters I use a backdrop and my logo title. In another I use a shadow figure of my protagonist Matthew which provides a sinister mysterious feel, yet not enough for audiences to understand exactly what the series is about.

The positives of the aesthetics on my posters is that I give a strong message as to when the series will be released. I also clearly include the logo and title of my series which viewers will recognise as trademarked Pigeon Hunt. The use of images, colours and shades in my poster has is very effective and portrays a dark and sinister feel to the setting of my series. The mountain landscape I edited uses dark greens and a grey, bleak sky which clearly conforms to the drama genre and mirrors other BBC Three series. My title Pigeon Hunt was original content which I drew out on paper and then scanned onto the computer to then edit on Illustrator. The title itself clearly portrays the element of being hunted and the style in which I drew it is slightly rigid and rural which conforms clearly to it being a drama and having that rural sinister feel.

Ethics/ Copyright (ASA)

When presenting the posters I will make sure that they do not show any graphic content or cause any offense to audience especially children who will be able to see these posters as they will be advertised publicly. I have also credited BBC Three as this is a BBC product made by them so all content is created by them. In terms of m copyright, the image are all copyright free, and the backdrops are taken from a copyright free website.

M3: Explain how the created media components comply with the codes and conventions of the media sectors

I will be comparing my advertising units to the tv show 'Stag' produced by BBC Two and 'End of the F***ing World' by Netflix as they offer a very similar experience for the audience with similar aims.

Trailer -

Stag

-The trailer for Stag is 1.04 minutes long

-The pace is gradual and builds up into quick changing scenes at its highest moment of tension

-The trailer as a whole is made up of 45 clips and places the title at the end of the video with BBC's credentials

-As a whole the trailer uses dank, bleak colouring to create a sinister tone and atmosphere creating the sense of horror within an ordinary location.

Pigeon Hunt

- For my trailer, the duration is 1.07 minutes. Comparing to Stag I achieve a similar time duration for another BBC trailer

-The pace of my trailer is fairly constant throughout. A lot of the clips are in time to the music, so pivotal dramatic moments are mainly shown through that of music

-My trailer has longer clips of footage using 10 clips. The aim of my trailer was not to show a sense of the characters so early, but to give the audience a taste of the environment and setting as well as the tone for the series.

-My trailer, like that seen in Stag, uses darker colours and shades to create a bleak, isolated location where these characters live, as well as portraying an overall mysterious sense to the characters and themes.

Social Media Page -

End of the F***ing World

The Facebook page of EOTFW is very clear and factual offering a clear sense of the programme with posts reminding the audience about it which the audience can like, share as well as follow the page.

The page offers the audience the trailer as well as photos, posts and gifs they can like and share with friends to raise audience awareness.

The series constantly reminds the audience of the second series to be released to not lose any audience attention or views. They use wording like that of the title to encourage the audiences engagement and create this world reminding the audience what the series offers.

Pigeon Hunt

With my own Facebook page, I offer the audience a very similar experience using the title as the profile picture to reiterate to the audience the series name, I also have my cover photo offering the audience a sense of environment within my series that they can engage with, as well as having clearly the BBC Three logo, reminding viewers this is a BBC production. My page enables any audience to follow and contact the production team as well as sharing content with friends.

I have created posts which viewers can like and share, expanding the advertisement boundary, reaching out to more people. I encourage the audience with reminders of dates to keep them interested, like EOTFW does when advertising its second series.

Radio Advert -

For radio advertisement, there are rarely broadcasts promoting TV programmes. I looked into dark themed adverts that would portray a similar tone to the audience. This advert talking about National Counter Terrorism Policing is very informative and clear with facts and delicate on such a raw subject. The voices in the script are well informed and offer the audience with a good knowledge of what has occurred.

Within my own advert, my primary aim was to present to the audience a clear informative advert that told listeners what the product was and where and when it would be aired. Without the ability to show visuals and the primary objective of my campaign was to show to the audience the environment and setting, I used as many characters as possible to get a wide sense of community and character linking, and used my protagonist Matthew to inform audience on him as a character, and a reversal in normality that occurs within the series.

Poster -

EOTFW/Stag

The posters used in the two series offer the audience a good sense of the characters and what the series is loosely like in terms of tone.

-The colours used are dull and darkened and the use of singular bright colours through clothing is dramatic and emphasises that these series are not completely horror and sinister based - there are elements of positivity.

-The fonts correspond to the title and logos of both series which remind the audience of the series and they can remember the name. Both fonts are clear and punchy and mirror the overall feeling and tone of the series. Stag being outdoors and muddy with the splats on the title, and EOTFW being young and free like the two characters who detach themselves from society and go off the rails.

-The layout in both posters shows the audience a mixture of character as well as setting. They both use locations from the series as a backdrop of the poster emphasising these worlds that the characters live among. Yet with this the characters are the forefront of the poster showing to the audience the story revolves around these people, and they are the ones who's story we follow.

-Both texts are large and clearly want the audience remember what they see so they can spread by word of mouth news of the series to friends and public.

Pigeon Hunt

Within my posters, I have used similar elements to attract audience attention

-I have used the iconic logo/title of the series that the audience will remember and link to the series with.

-I have also used a backdrop from location of the series which will offer to the audience a glimpse of the world the series revolves within.

-The text is large and clear so that an audience viewer will be able to clearly read what is being advertised. I have addressed the series name, release date, as well as credit BBC Three for its creation which is also done in EOTFW's poster with the Netflix logo.
