Client Brief -
Your TV drama series has been green lit by BBC Three and they have asked you to produce an advertising campaign for it.
The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness of the series and attract viewers when it is broadcast. You must identify and justify the series’ target audience.
Your campaign must have a strong message, include cross media advertising and there must be no copyright or ethical issues that could undermine BBC Three.
Advertising Campaign
The advertisement products I have created for my series
'Pigeon Hunt' range over cross media platforms such as a Trailer, uploaded to YouTube, a Radio Broadcast, Visual Posters with images and release dates and a social media page with information on the series and contact details of the production company.
The advertisement elements will certainly raise awareness of the series as they address a glimpse of what the series is like such as characters, setting and situation. I have also included production company (BBC Three) and release dates for the series (1st December).
There is a strong message with the series showing an empathetic view of teenagers and their life struggles. The message of the series is to 'watch your back', and the suspicion people have of each other.
There are certain no ethical issues within my advertisement elements as i have offered a fair and moral representation of all characters and the situation of the series. In terms of having a murderer I have made sure no content is too graphic or offensive to viewers. In terms of copyright I have used music from an up and coming band
Trailer
Technical -
My trailers video resolution (1920x1080)
File Format (.mov)
I compressed the video to make it smaller and able to export onto YouTube as well as on my Blog
Aesthetic -
For my video trailer I did not completely meet the requirements of producing a BBC Three Drama. This was due to my (£0) budget limiting me to resources, crew and equipment such as cameras, editing software's and lighting. The overall quality of my video was not as high quality as BBC would prefer. The lighting in my video is also quite dark and dim due to the lighting conditions on location. This meant I wasn't able to clearly check footage on shoot day to make sure lighting worked well. Despite correcting white balance and IPSO the quality did not come out as hoped. In terms of my sound there was a fair bit of wind in the audio as I didn't have a mic due to budget and resource restrictions. Thankfully none of my clips contained dialogue, but clips that I recorded including sound from the location also had a lot of wind and blowing which made the audio crackle and interrupted flow.
Elements in my video that I felt achieved client brief as well as BBC Three standards was the overall tone and content of the video, complying to a drama. With the dim lighting the camera picked up and the bleak, grey setting on location with the weather, my trailer looked very sinister and serious, complying to a serious drama with the horror aspects I wanted to include. I believe the trailer offered a strong message to viewers and audience allowing them to understand this is a drama series with horror elements. I felt my use of shots were varied and offered a well shot trailer with different angles and level such as medium shot, long shot, low angle and extreme close up. The varied angles made the video more engaging as I offered the audience numerous angles to get a better experience of the setting. I also used cross media as my trailer was uploaded to YouTube for viewers to watch as well as on my Facebook page where they can share content.
Ethics/ Copyright (ASA) -
All clips shot were copyright free, original content produced by myself such as images, audio and video. In my trailer as well as my Radio Broadcast, I used the song 'The Last Hangman' by an up and coming band Hotel Lux. I found their Instagram page and direct messaged them asking to rights to use their song -

In terms of ethical issues, I made sure I complied to the rules written out by the ASA. The themes I portrayed such as death with the bloody knife I made sure I did not cause any offence or have too graphic images to distress certain audience demographics as my advertisement will be open to the public via social media and posters.
Social Media Page
Technical - My products followed the Facebook guidelines. Videos were (1920x1080/ 1080x1080). Images are (72 dpi)
Aesthetic -
In terms of my aesthetics on my social media page I followed the Facebook guidelines for videos and images. I used my poster backdrop for my background photo and my title logo for my profile picture. The page also includes information about the series including a descriptions and release dates. I have included my trailer as well as counting down release date posts and also character thought tracks of characters. This meets BBC Three standards as the audience will be able to share these posts as well as liking commenting and watching on demand getting any information they require.

The aspects of my social media page that may not meet client requirements and BBC Three standards is the amount of content my page offers. I have limited posts including a release date, trailer and a character thought track. I could have also uploaded posters and the radio broadcast to offer more information and content to audiences. If on a larger budget and had more time I also could have done interviews with cast members and Q and A's as well as possible live streams so audiences could properly connect with the show and actors.
Ethics/ Copyright (ASA) -
I have made sure that all my content is non offensive to audiences as well as representing characters and themes fairly so viewers won't be offended. Complying to the ASA I have made sure that any audiences to decide to follow the page or like, comment and share that their details and privacy is protected and nothing within our page will exploit or expose their privacy.
Radio Broadcast
Technical - My radio advert is a (AIFF) with (92 KB's) as well as compressing it reducing loud sounds and increasing volume of quiet sounds.
Aesthetic -
The aesthetic properties of my radio advertisement don't completely meet the requirements of the client as well as the BBC standards. This is due to the lack of resources and lower quality equipment I had available to use. The limited resources and the lack of quality meant the sound and audio will suffer and not be completely clear and sharp. If I had the capability of recording in a recording studio the content would be sharper as well as having complete silence in the background as I was only able to record in an empty room yet small sounds such as ac and distant sound could have affected my audio
The positive elements within my radio broadcast was that the audio despite being low quality, was clear and distinctive to the characters speaking. The overall audio flowed well from the editing and the piece as a whole was clear. I compressed the audio so that loud sounds were quietened and quiet sounds were increased in volume which made the overall audio very clear as all the audio was equal. throughout. I also clearly featured a character profile of Matthew who also introduced and described the series as a whole. I also included a release date at the end to remind the audience the exact date of release.
Ethics/ Copyright (ASA)
I made sure that all content I used and recorded was copyright free and originally made by myself. I made sure that characters I represented were not offensive or portrayed negative stereotypes of the character.
I also followed the ASA requirements that states advertisement can't be too loud in order to prevent possible accidents on the road while driving.
Poster
Techical - My print resolution is (300 ppi) and the posters themselves were (150 ppi) as my poster is viewed from further away so viewers will see it clearly.
Aesthetic -
In terms of my poster I did not fully comply to the requirements of the BBC or the client. The backdrop of my poster was not original content made by myself as the images and shots I took on location were not high quality enough to use in printing. This is why I used non copyright images on the website 'Pixabay' which enabled me to use an image of a Scottish landscape in very high quality. I also do not completely portray clearly what my series is about as in one of my posters I use a backdrop and my logo title. In another I use a shadow figure of my protagonist Matthew which provides a sinister mysterious feel, yet not enough for audiences to understand exactly what the series is about.
The positives of the aesthetics on my posters is that I give a strong message as to when the series will be released. I also clearly include the logo and title of my series which viewers will recognise as trademarked
Pigeon Hunt. The use of images, colours and shades in my poster has is very effective and portrays a dark and sinister feel to the setting of my series. The mountain landscape I edited uses dark greens and a grey, bleak sky which clearly conforms to the drama genre and mirrors other BBC Three series. My title Pigeon Hunt was original content which I drew out on paper and then scanned onto the computer to then edit on Illustrator. The title itself clearly portrays the element of being hunted and the style in which I drew it is slightly rigid and rural which conforms clearly to it being a drama and having that rural sinister
feel.
Ethics/ Copyright (ASA)
When presenting the posters I will make sure that they do not show any graphic content or cause any offense to audience especially children who will be able to see these posters as they will be advertised publicly. I have also credited BBC Three as this is a BBC product made by them so all content is created by them. In terms of m copyright, the image are all copyright free, and the backdrops are taken from a copyright free website.
