Attack the Block - In terms of genre
What is genre?
Genre consists of different styles, conventions and themes in which effects a films setting and atmosphere which can be recognised by an audience.
What have prominent critics said about genre?
Genres are instances of repetition and difference. Difference in genre is absolutely essential because repetition wouldn't attract any audience. Genre is in a constant process of negotiation and change and is defined in terms of Semantic and Syntactic elements.
What genre would you say Attack the Block is?
I would say Attack the Block consists of multiple genres. These consist of Horror, Sci-Fi, Comedy and Action.
What codes and conventions does it contain that make it fit these genres?
Attack the Block consists of semantic elements such as gangs, youths and crime was well as mixing with aliens, supernatural and apocalypse feeling. As well as using syntactic elements of action in fight scenes etc. Also the narrative is portrayed in a comedic way which lightens the mood of the high intensity scenes
Was the film marketed as belonging to a particular genre?
In the marketing and promotion of the film Attack the Block it seems very action based. For example the film cover all the characters are standing together in an action pose which portrays the film as quite serious and potentially not that you would expect to be classed as horror.
What kind of target audience do you think would be attracted to films in this genre?
I believe the the sort of target audience that would be attracted to a film such as this would be those who enjoy modern action films set in urban areas. Those who also enjoy the horror side to supernatural aliens.
