Unit 3 - M1

The Brief

My short film is under 10 minutes which was the maximum length for a short film

It shows a specific, recognisable genre and the style being a drama as well as mood throughout the film which links to it such as the use of drugs and teenage life

I am working in a group of three, myself, James Bowes and Alex Hardgreaves and have assigned each other to specific roles. James- Camera operator and director, Alex- Editor and Patrick- Director

The script is all original content and was devised by myself. The inspiration was from the lives of youths and what they do to be cool and fit into friendship groups

The music and audio we will use will be all our own which will be made in Garage Band. If it comes to us using pre made music we will be sure to reference it in our credits of the film

Examples of Short Film Distributors that operate in the UK

Shorts International Ltd is the world’s leading short film entertainment company with the world’s largest catalogue of short movies. It owns and operates ShortsTV, which brings audiences around the world the best short movies on TV, online and in theaters, as well as Shorts Factory, which produces original short film content for broadcasters and brands.

The film tells the story of Bill, whose daily routines, perceptions, and dreams are illustrated onscreen via multiple split-screen windows. Though his life seems mundane at first, he has trouble remembering things and the sights and sounds of the world are sometimes overwhelming. His life is narrated in several humorous and dramatic anecdotes, very gradually growing darker and terrifying as he appears to be suffering from a possibly fatal mental disorder (and has apparently been receiving treatment for it for quite some time). The film illustrates the struggle many people have with mental illness, in the inherent difficulty in deciding which muddled thought or distracted perception is most important and should be paid attention to. Meanwhile, Bill is suddenly faced with the possible end of his life.

This film was targeted to adults with children who are facing difficult decisions in life which is sort of similar to our film with how the it is the children facing difficult decisions while trying to live life to the full. The link this film has to our own is the way how the film focusses on one main protagonist and their struggles in life and the pressure they have to face and ultimately facing life and death situations in decisions they make. This is why I feel Shorts International is a company we can really work from in their ways of portrayal of characters and building story and characterisation.

Candella UK distributes packages of short films at over 300 European and worldwide festivals, with the specific aim of promoting UK filmmaking beyond our shores. Candella-promoted shorts have won major prizes at European festivals in recent years.
This documentary looks into the interiorised sexism in women that together are searching for answers and ways to unlearn. There is a hidden sexism in the European society that hides a worrying fact; we are in a sexist society therefore we are all sexists. We will meet many women that are fighting for equal opportunities and wonder what will be their reaction when putt in front of the “female south American high society” not the unprivileged, the privilege ones, the other half, openly sexists in a society that still living in the MAD MEN scenario in the XXI century fighting to keep it that way for generations to come.

This film that we I have looked upon looks on the topics of female representation which is a key aspect in our film having a female protagonist. We can use similar representations of how women are presented in ou distribution of our film in how we want our audience to feel. Our film is about a girl who makes poor choices but in how we represent her will define the overall representation of the film.

Overall, the film distributer we will use will be Short International due to how they are experienced in distributing hard hitting films and letting an audience know this before seeing a film.

Marketing Methods

Our own film being aimed at a younger audience, our main methods of advertising would be through social media on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. Our adverts would include a trailer, film covers and film covers to attract the audience, giving them a glimpse of the full feature.  We would also feature our trailer on YouTube where people can share and like the widen the audience.

We will also promote our film through banner advertising on billboards and posters in public spaces etc which will hopefully encourage word of mouth and widen the viewers and popularity of the film.

Unit 1 - Attack The Block Case Study Analysis

Mise-En-Scène

Setting:
Set in a council estate in South London in the late evening on bonfire night. We follow young teens trying to fight back the alien invaders. It's a very urban setting, being in London, and the general locations filmed at are all built up areas.

Costume:
The main characters we follow in the film are a group of teenage city boys. As seen in the first scene they are somewhat of a gang so wear clothing to match. Quite dark clothes, hoodies, jeans/joggers and trainers. They also have knives on them to add to the sense that they are hooligans. BMX's and other bikes are also a common prop used by the boys to make their gangster likeness more realistic.

Lighting:
A lot of the lighting in the film is very dark. Most of it in a blue and black range giving it that Sci-Fi nature to the film as well as the horror aspect. A lot of bright quick flashes used too which links to the action side of the film.

Sound
The sound in the film spans across a large area of genre. Eerie music and sound effects are used for the horror moments and suspense in the film. Spooky sound effects of creaking and alien noises are commonly used. In the moments of high adrenaline and fast pace action scenes, faster music is used to emphasise the moment and keep the audience transfixed. To make the setting realistic there are a lot of city noises used throughout the film such as sirens, cars horns and crowds.
